ケンブリッジ英検FCEとCAE両方に10か月で合格する方法 / How to pass Cambridge English test both FCE and CAE in 10 months

Hello everyone!

Hello everyone!

This is Shun.

This time I would like to write about the Cambridge English Proficiency Test, which is not so familiar in Japan.

I think it's a great test for anyone who wants to improve their English, or is thinking of studying abroad, so I hope this helps a little!

1. そもそもケンブリッジ英語検定とは? / What is the Cambridge English Test in the first place?

【概要 / General Info

The Cambridge Certificate in English is a prestigious language qualification recognized by more than 20,000 universities, corporations, and government agencies around the world as proof of English proficiency.

It is known as the most common test as proof of English proficiency, especially within Europe. (Many Swiss came to study at the language school in Canada to take this exam.)

It is one of the more widely recognized exams in the world, with an increasing number of accreditation bodies in North America, where IELTS and TOEFL are more commonly used.

【特徴 / Feature

A unique feature of the Cambridge English Language Certificate is that the language certification is semi-permanent.

Like the English Language Proficiency Test in Japan, the test is divided into different levels, and once a person passes the test at that level, it is valid until the death of the person who took the test as proof of language level.

各レベルはCEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment:外国語の学習、教授、評価のためのヨーロッパ共通参照枠)に沿って高い順にCPE(C2)〜KET(A2)の5段階あります。(下表参照)

There are five levels, from CPE (C2) to KET (A2), in descending order according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment). KET (A2) (see table below). (See table below)

According to this chart, passing the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) would place you at the C2 level, which is higher than passing the EIKEN Level 1.

(However, I heard that CPE is difficult to pass even for native speakers unless you prepare for the exam. lol)

While Eiken and TOEIC are well-known in Japan, Cambridge English Proficiency Test, TOEFL, and IELTS are rather more widely recognized in foreign countries.

If you're going to study anyway, it seems like a better deal to take a world-class exam.

2. ケンブリッジ英検とその他の英語資格の違いとは? / What is the difference between Cambridge and other English language qualifications?

Next, we will look at the differences between the Cambridge Certificate and other English language qualifications.

Even within the same English language qualification, each test format has its own unique characteristics.

The Cambridge English Proficiency Test differs from other qualifications in the following three ways.

① 有効期限 / Expiration Date

As mentioned above, unlike TOEIC and IELTS, which have a fixed validity period of 2 years, it is a great advantage that it is effective as a semi-permanent proof of English proficiency.

For example, if you studied English as a student and then decide to take it again when you think about changing jobs, it would honestly be difficult to spend a lot of time studying even if you wanted to score at the same level.

This is also one of the main reasons why I decided to take the test.

② テスト形式 / Exam Format

The Cambridge English Proficiency Test is divided into the following five examinations, each of which is scored separately.

I. reading/リーディング

II. listening/リスニング

III. writing/ライティング

IV. speaking/スピーキング

V. grammar/文法

The average of these scores is compared to the passing standard score (180 for CAE) to determine whether the applicant has passed or failed the exam.

The speaking and writing sections of the exam are particularly unique in terms of format.

・スピーキング/ Speaking

While other English examinations are generally conducted by one examiners and one examinee each, the Cambridge Examination has two examinees , and the exam includes two people discussing the material presented.

The content of the test is highly challenging, requiring not only English language skills but also communication skills, as you have to converse in English with the first person you meet that day.

It consists of two parts, and the first part always includes an essay.

The second part of the question will be in the form of a letter to a friend, a report, or a letter to an instructor, from which the student will choose one option to answer.

Common to both parts 1 and 2 is that the viewpoints to be discussed are prepared in advance, and you are to use them to prepare your answers.

The first key to success is to become familiar with how to write the essay, which is always a part of the application.

③ イギリス訛りorアメリカ訛り / British accent or American accent

Many English tests incorporate American English, and the only special accents are a few British and Australian accents used in TOEIC.

In comparison, the Cambridge examination not only employs mainly British accents, but also strong Irish and Scottish accents.

(The accents were so strong that when I heard them for the first time, I couldn't understand them. (These accents were so strong that when I first heard them, I couldn't understand them. lol)

Most of the English you hear in Japan is relatively easy-to-understand English from the U.S. and Canada, so I can say that the only way to get used to listening to English is to keep listening to the exam questions...

3. どんな勉強法がオススメ? / Recommended study methods

◎何よりも重要なのが単語力 / Vocabulary is more important than anything else

As mentioned above, the Cambridge Exam requires a high level of proficiency in all four skills. The higher the level, the more important is vocabulary.

If you have studied in Japan, even at the CAE level, you are not required to do more than the university entrance examination in terms of grammar.

However, if you do not know the vocabulary, it will be difficult to achieve high scores in areas other than grammar.

It is important to first solve the past examinations, and then look up each unfamiliar word in the dictionary to ensure that you remember it.

At this time, it is useful to look up synonyms in a dictionary for use in writing.

◎リスニングはPodcastで / Listening is by podcast

An effective listening strategy is to listen repeatedly to 5~10 minutes of short English on podcasts.

Preferably one in which British English is used, such as BBC News.

BBC News Podcast

I think it is a good idea to proceed in such a way that when you can perfectly listen to one video or radio program, you can move on to the next and so on.

◎スピーキングはとにかく外国人と話すこと / Speaking is just talking to English Speakers

You may not find many opportunities to speak with foreigners in Japan, but speaking with foreigners is the best way to learn real English.

There are now language exchange apps, and it is important to go to a bar and talk, even in poor English, with the foreign tourists there over drinks.

そして彼らの言い回しを聞いて、どういう言い回しをすれば伝わるのかという表現の引き出しを増やすと英語力は確実に伸びると思います。 If you listen to their phrases and increase your knowledge of how to express yourself in English, I believe your English ability will certainly improve.

◎ライティングは「形式への慣れ」と「formalとinformalの使い分け」が鍵に / Familiarity with formality and the use of "formal and informal" are key to writing.

As mentioned above, writing is a key test for success.

It may be no different from other exams in that you will need to become familiar with the format, but each writing type (essay, letter, etc.) has a difference between formal and informal writing styles.

この選択を間違えるとどんなに上級レベルの単語を書いていたところで得点が伸びることはありません。 If you make the wrong choice, no matter how advanced the level of vocabulary you write, your score will not improve.

It will be necessary to learn words and phrases appropriate to the formality of the sentence, such as not using phrasal verbs in Formal sentences and actively incorporating group verbs in the opposite manner in Informal.

4. まとめ / Summary

So far, I have written about the Cambridge Examination. How do you feel about it?

Personally, in terms of learning English, I think that rather than studying for the TOEIC, it would be more practical to acquire the four skills of speaking and listening in addition to reading and writing through exam preparation such as the Cambridge English Proficiency Test.

(TOEICで高得点を取れても英語が話せない人も結構いますが、IELTSやケンブリッジ英検の高得点を取れていて話せない人はあまりいないイメージです) (There are quite a few people who can get a high score on TOEIC but cannot speak English, but I imagine there are not many people who can get a high score on IELTS or Cambridge English Proficiency Test but cannot speak English.)

However, TOEIC is also widely recognized in Japan, and it is always better to take it for job hunting and other purposes, so I think you should decide which test you would like to take after considering the time and effort involved.

I took the test in 2016, so this information is out of date, but I hope it will be of some help.

それでは、See you soon!
